Introduction to Medicinal Chemistry

Medicinal Chemistry Introduction to Medicinal ChemistryMedicinal chemistry is the science of synthetic drug design, and involves the study of structure activity relationships (SAR) and their effects on chemotype activity and selectivity for a given biological event involving an enzyme or protein. Most people working in the field of medicinal chemistry have strong skills in synthetic Organic Chemistry, and have learned biochemistry, biology, molecular biology and pharmacology over a period of several years. Medicinal chemistry is the marriage of Organic Chemistry and medicine, aspiring to develop superior drugs for disease states across multiple therapeutic indications.

How does medicinal chemistry work, and how are drugs designed?

Organic Chemistry of Heterocycles

Heterocyclic Chemistry Organic Chemistry of HeterocyclesWhen taking undergraduate Organic Chemistry, I had about as much exposure to heterocyclic chemistry (Organic Chemistry of heteroatom containing cyclic compounds) as any other student… not much. Once in graduate school, however, I developed a self-interest in the subject, pushing myself to write and defend a novel research proposal on “The Unified Synthesis of 5- and 6-Membered Nitrogen Heterocycles” using enyne nitriles under radical cyclization conditions. Writing the proposal was easy. Defending it in the presence of a professor who was an expert in nitrogen-centered radicals was challenging. I passed the first time around, and had a strong interest in heterocycles ever since.

Electronic Organic Chemistry Flash Cards

OSUCD Electronic Organic Chemistry Flash CardsI’ve been blogging on Organic Chemistry since 25 June 2011, and I often wondered what would be the topic of my shortest article. Well folks, this is it.

The Chemistry Department of the Ohio State University has an interesting collection of electronic O-Chem flash cards. I believe this link will be of assistance to anyone studying the subject.

The Anxious Untutored Student

anxious%20student The Anxious Untutored StudentI’ve been teaching & tutoring Organic Chemistry for over nine years, and must say I’ve learned far more about what students need from tutoring that I ever could have from teaching. I get to “see” the student first hand as s/he attempts to grasp concepts, however more so when s/he strives to make applications of the concepts toward the solution of complex problems. Furthermore, I develop a close relationship of trust and confidence with virtually every student who comes my way. This bond provides me with the opportunity to peer into both their mind and their soul.
